DragonSword: Awakening Status Ailments Explained

Last updated: June 2026

Every Status Ailment type, stacking rules, Signal Skill triggers, and team synergy fundamentals.

The Status Ailment Combat System

DragonSword: Awakening distinguishes itself from standard action RPGs through Status Ailment-driven tag combat. Each of the 19 heroes applies specific ailments — Stun, Bleed, Airborne, Fire, Knockdown, Break, and more — through normal attacks and active skills. Stacking ailments opens Signal Skills, and chaining Signals via hero swaps creates Switching Signal sequences that define high-level play.

Think of ailments as combo prerequisites rather than passive debuffs. A Stun applied by Castella enables Lute's grab follow-up. Airborne launched by Aria's bombs allows Johnny to execute aerial Signals. Fire damage from Kalien's spirits sets up explosive detonations when paired with arrow skills from Aria.

Primary Ailment Types

Stun immobilizes enemies briefly and enables grab skills. Lute, Theresia, and Kalien all contribute Stun in different ways. Bleed delivers sustained damage over time; Theresia's flails and Ornette's thief skills stack Bleed rapidly. Airborne launches enemies for juggle combos — Aria, Charlotte, and aerial-focused teams build entire rotations around it. Knockdown floors enemies for ground follow-ups. Break depletes guard meters before Stun application. Fire adds explosive interactions with certain detonation skills.

Super Armor appears on elite and boss enemies as a secondary gauge. Breaking Super Armor is mandatory before mount phases and extended Signal chains on Field Giant Bosses.

Building Around Ailments

Successful teams cover ailment application, extension, and Signal payoff across three heroes. Avoid redundant overlap unless a hero provides amplification — for example, double Stun without Signal diversity wastes slot potential. Use our Team Builds hub for Bleed, Airborne, and Stun templates, and the Team Builder tool to validate coverage before spending in-game resources on recruitment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Status Ailments can stack at once?
Multiple ailment types can coexist on a target. Signal Skills require specific combinations — check each hero's kit for required ailments before swapping.
What breaks Super Armor?
Repeated ailment application and specific grab skills deplete the Super Armor gauge beneath boss health. Theresia and Roxy excel at rapid Super Armor break in developer demonstrations.
Can I mount any enemy?
Large monsters allow mounting only when certain Status Ailments are active and Super Armor is broken. Not every hero has mount follow-ups.
